Hi there! Again, it's been a loooong time since the last post. As I said before, I prefer focusing on developing the game better than keeping this place updated. However, 5 monts with no news may make you think the game's dead forever. So here I am to show you how wrong you are.

The first thing you may have noticed is the blog design. Cute, isn't it? All cloudy and all... Making a new post just to celebrate the new look would be stupid, but I had to say something about it tho! I've been working to increase the perfomance of the game, thus making it possible to play it on older PC's. Thanks to the guys on #gmc IRC channel for the help on that. Also thanks to Halo_sgh for his magnificent "cleanmem.dll" which saved lots of the space the game used to eat.

So right now the game eats 5-7 mb of RAM. Not too much I think, regarding the quality of the game graphics. Once I achieved this, I started working on so many things I don't know which one to start from.
Let's start, only this time, with the music. I don't usually start a post talking about the game OST, but the song I got this time may deserve it. It's called "The Red Lands" and can be listened in the Red Desert, a place I've already show you pictures from.  Click below to listen to it.
Did you like it? You can listen to it in the "Game OST" menu to the right, upon the Chatbox. If you want to know what you'll see while you listen to this piece ingame, here's a screenshot of the Red Desert I've already shown, but not in public:
This is where you begin in the game (not exactly but kinda yes). When the song starts playing, there's a little of rain on the screen, that ceases just when the melody changes to a more leading one.

I'd like to show you another screen. In it you'll see Hibari on an helicopter being carried to her first mission by some friend (aha! did you notice the character driving the heli? Not Duke Nukem!)
The next screen I have for you is taken from the Spiritual World, a place where the souls of those fallen rest forever. It's a place Hibari didn't know that actually existed... until she got there somehow. That location will be the frame where important things will happen.
And, here's a single frame of the CG movie the game will feature for the game opening among other moments. The drawing quality it's not too much, but it's difficult you know!
Hmm, I think that'll do it today. The next time I'd like to bring you a video, with Hibari's spanish voice in it. If you are bored enough, you can't wait, or you like ninja girls, here's some official art of Hibari.
Enjoy it! See you next time!

¡Buenas! ¡No importa!

The Nexus-Temples

ENGLISH

Here we are again, ready to show some recent news about Spirit Huntress.
Today it's the time to learn a little bit about one of the game's locations (actually it's more than one): The Nexus Temples.

Hidden underground, these ancient temples were built with specific purposes, now forgotten because of the passage of the time. There are several of these structures over the world, and the first one we get to visit is under the Red Desert.

It's appearance exudes majesty, or it would if the entire place wasn't ruined and dusty. You can see the whole first room of this place right here:

They are not safe places, since you can find traps and some enemies inside. Actually, the place is strongly guarded by a misterious clan of purple ninja warriors, aparently trying to hide whatever the temple holds inside...

These are one of the first human foes you'll able to find ingame. Regarding their human condition, they are more intelligent than other enemies, they have weapons, and they can detect you. Wich means, they can't if you are smart enough. Battle and Stealth issues will be treated in further posts.

Meanwhile, enjoy some sketch art from the temple and the enemy design.

See you soon!

Desert Facility

ENGLISH
->Game OST Updated (Desert Facility)!
->Featured Fan Art Updated (Hibari by Alien)!

Welcome again, and happy Halloween! As promised, here I am one more time, willing to show you some of my lastest efforts with this project.

Recently, I have been working in this game level (or "location") called the "Desert Facility". This place is some kind of "base" or "research facility", built over ancient ruins found in the middle of a big canon called "The Red Desert".

It's purpose is a complete mistery, however. What's a big laboratory like this doing in the middle of a wasteand? Why is it built specifically over those ruins, covering them? and why does it looks so empty?

There's no doubt that the place was abandoned years ago. But that doesn't mean the security devices of the facility aren't working. In fact, they will become very active as soon as Hibari steps into the abandoned station...

At first it's pretty dark inside there... Good luck A-00, Hibari's auxiliar bot, can light the way a little bit.

So the first thing you'll have to do here is restore the power system. There must be some kind of generator out there...

Once you get to restore the power, you will get to see the place and to use the facility's mechanisms: switches, elevators, doors, etc.

Now you can check out the place to find hidden items, and to find out the purpose of the facility.

This level is not very huge since it's one of the firsts place you'll get to; but there are some hidden areas and shortcuts; so if you could get some help...

That is! You can download on your A-00 the zone map; so you can check out what rooms you have to visit yet. The map will also display dots showing the location of some hidden item, upgrade, weapon, etc. And of course, it will show your ubication. What you won't get to see there is your objetive: the place you have to go. I don't like games that show you were to go so easily. So you'll have to figure out where's the right room to go.

And well, that was a big lot of screen caps, my readers. But that isn't all! Be sure to check the new Game OST theme (Deser Facility Theme) and the featured artwork by my friend Alien!

I hope you enjoyed this post, since it has so much new info to see, read and listen!

Thank you for your visit and keep coming back for new updates about the game!

Adding depth to the stages

ENGLISH

-> Game OST updated (The Haven)!
-> Featured fan art updated (Hibari by Oken)!

Hi again, everyone! Today I'd like to show you a very important change I've made to the game stages look. If you go back to some old post and take a look to some old screenshot, you may notice that the point of view consists of a one-point perspective (full frontal view, without depth).
After thinking about it, i thought, what if I use a two-point perspective, so the player can see what's behind/ in front of the walls? What if I use this new dimension to improve the exploration? And of course I answered myself: YES. Have a look to some examples:

As you can see, now the point of view has changed a little, what I seized to make some changes to this desert stage, enhancing some little details here and there.
This new situation sure makes harder drawing and designing the game levels, however the results worth it. Here are some other screenshots:

>Noticed the new background picture? Do you like it more than the other one? Slaying biped robots feels better like this, man!

>Also, running animation. Looking good?

>Secrets, secrets everywhere.

That's a big bunch of screenshots, if you ask me. So I think that's enough today.
As you see, I worked hard these last days improving the game grapichs. But that's not all!
I've composed 3 new themes for the Game OST (one of them, "Haven", is now avalaible in the "Game OST" section, right under the chat box) wich sound pretty good, thanks to the master composer "Aurial/Sonata", who made a stunning .sf2 pack for FLStudio, including wonderful japanese ethnic soundfonts and samples (like Shakuhachi, Koto, Shamisen, Fiddle, Taiko, etc). Thank you master for this valuable gift!
Aside from music, I've worked a lot in the game code. I've added some new moves to the Hibari moveset, wich is now closer to being complete (around 40% I'd say). However, I'm facing some bugs in terms of collisions, but I hope to solve them soon.
Also started to design some kind of "world map", placing every stage in a huge map, so I can thing of new ways to link the game levels between them, and to decide the order you'll visit them.
That also made me think about the way our dear Hibari is going to travel around the world (wich is not "small" precisely). The original game back in 2005 was smaller and I planned to make you go walking all the time. But now I think I may include some kind of vehicle, that can be used just to go back to places you've already been to; and never to discover new locations. This vehicle would be driven by some character you'll meet someday in this blog, and could be used to get out of the level anywhen you want. Opinions on this?

And that's all by now, my dear readers. Please, stay tuned for new posts! The day I'll release a little demo of the game is getting closer!

¡Exacto! He decidido añadir profundidad a los escenarios.

¡Muchas gracias, maestro!

Me despido y me voy a seguir estudiando :P.

Welcome-Bienvenidos

ENGLISH

Welcome to the new Spirit Huntress Blog! Here you can follow the latest news about this project: releases, screenshots, gameplay, levels, bosses, etc.
You may have noticed this is a bilingual blog... I'll do my best to translate my posts from spanish (my mother language) to english; but I can easily make a lot of mistakes. If that happens; please, forgive me, and do not hesitate to tell me what's wrong with my english.

Moving on the game itself, I can say that Spirit Huntress is being developed with the Game Maker 8 tool. This software provides me the freedom I need to create graphics and code, and for me, it works pretty fine. Taking advantage of the Game Maker Language (GML), this tool has little to envy other platforms. I use adobe Photoshop CS2 to create the graphics, and FLStudio 8 for the original sound track.

Spirit Huntress takes place in some kind of post-apocalyptic future, where only a few cities remain, as a mirage of what they once were. The rest of the world is a wild place, full of all kinds of live (including mutants). And attached to every single life, there is a spirit.
What would you call a spirit in this game? a spirit is just a form that the vital energy within every beign can adopt. Spirits, as a rule, wander around the human world, until they find the place where they rest forever. They are invisible, intangible; they can't be noticed. Except by some people with special powers. However, not every spirit is that kind. Some of them get disturbed by evil forces, and become violent. The posses other creatures, turning them into monsters, and making them immortal.

The main character of the game, Hibari, is a 25 years old girl, true to the traditions of her family. She is what is called a "Spirit Huntress", some kind of hunter dedicated to find and "chase" or "purge" disturbed spirits. Hibari is a very self-confident, strong and disciplined girl, who learnt the art of ninjitsu from her grandmother.
A-00 is a little bot with some tracking capabilities, constructed by her grandfather before dying, and being her only partner.

The game will take you to a remarkable variety of levels, like isolated canyons, underwater caves, futuristics cities, ancient temples, and maybe places out of the human world.

Using the traditional "2d platform scroller" formula, Spirit Huntress will make you jump, run, double jump, wall jump, climb, fight with many weapons, defeat giantic bosses, and find a large amount of secrets.

Well, that was a summary of the game. It's only left to say that the game will use 100% original graphics and music, and that it's going to be released anytime soon :)

Seriously, this game is still in development. This is like a "developer journal" or something like that; so you can just come here, sit down, and learn about the last advances Spirit Huntress gets.
I try to always show one or two screens, so you can do something aside from reading.
For example, you already can listen to one of the game Original Sound Track themes, (look below the chatbox). Screenshots, however, will have to wait a day or two, for I don't want to show anything yet.

Nah, fuck it. Enjoy a little screenshot.

I hope you like it, and that you enjoy reading my blog. Thank you very much!
